Formula Used

Total Months = (End Year − Start Year) × 12 + (End Month − Start Month + 1)

Both the start and end months are counted (inclusive). For example, March 2020 to July 2023: (2023 − 2020) × 12 + (7 − 3 + 1) = 36 + 5 = 41 months = 3 years 5 months.

When jobs overlap, the calculator merges the date ranges before summing, so shared months are counted exactly once.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my total work experience?
Add each job's start and end dates using the calculator above. The tool automatically sums all months across roles and handles overlapping employment, giving you the exact total in years and months with no manual math required.
What formula is used to calculate years of experience?
Total Months = (End Year − Start Year) × 12 + (End Month − Start Month + 1)

Both start and end months are counted. Then: Years = Total Months ÷ 12 (rounded down), Remaining Months = Total Months mod 12.
How are overlapping jobs handled?
The calculator uses an interval merge algorithm: all date ranges are sorted by start date, overlapping ranges are merged into one, and only the merged total is counted. This means if you held a full-time role and a part-time freelance project simultaneously, the shared months appear only once in your total.
Can I include a current job I'm still working at?
Yes — toggle the Present switch on that job card. The calculator automatically uses today's date as the end date and will update every time you reload the page.
How many jobs can I add?
Unlimited. The calculator handles any number of roles, merging overlapping ranges automatically.
Is this work experience calculator free to use?
100% free. No account, no sign-up, no data ever sent to a server. All calculations run entirely in your browser.
Does this calculator work on mobile?
Yes, fully responsive and touch-optimized. Works on any phone, tablet, or desktop in Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox.
